Selvom han også laver andre typer film, var det da heller ikke en tilfældighed, at Mortensens første hovedrolle efter Ringenes Herre-trilogien, var cowboy-filmen “Hidalgo” (2004) om et hesteløb over den arabiske ørken.

Müller slår til daglig sine folder i Bayern München, men når den ikke står på at score mål, fylder heste faktisk en god del i spillerens liv. Dette skyldes ikke mindst hans kone, Lisa Müller. Men når det kommer til at tage sig af hestene. Pleje, foder, helbred og så videre, så er Thomas lige så involveret som tiden tillader.
